The Posters of Pedro Almódovar

As a movie buff, I love Pedro Almodóvar movies. His stories are heavily inspired by a combination of his particular peculiarities with women, mothers, daughters, sisters, sex, religion, gender, Spain, and Alfred Hitchcock. But what often draws me into to his movies time and time again are his posters. Much of that work can be attributed to Juan Oreste Gatti, an Argentine graphic designer, art director, and Almodóvar’s closest collaborator. Spain-based El Deseo is Almodóvar’s biggest distributor, and Gatti is Almodóvar’s most consistent artist. Red favors heavily in nearly all of this work, which is remarkable considering who gets to design these posters vary from movie distributor to movie distributor.
Movie poster design is a difficult field. The work is highly visible and highly regarded. But finding proper attributions to the artists and designers is extremely difficult. Often artists give up their rights to claim credit for their work, and ownership goes to the movie’s distributor. But if one particular artist happens to be highly prolific, in-demand, or well-known, then finding attribution becomes easier.
Posteritati continues to do excellent work archiving and documenting artists and designers of movie posters. And while their catalog is well-kept, finding the original artists is still quite difficult. And because Gatti is based in Argentina, most of his credits are cited in Spain and Argentina.
